📄 Clement History by Perley Derby

The following is from a 30 page handwritten manuscript. At the end it says it was prepared by Perley Derby of Salem, MA, who wrote many family histories during the latter half of the 19th century.

This manuscript is not dated. The latest date that appears in it is 1837, however Derby doesn't seem to have started writing family histories until a few decades later. It's not clear when, but not until after the US Civil War and perhaps not until well after then.

It's not clear if this is Derby's original or someone's transcript of it.

Gen. 1

1701 Dracut

Robert Clement1, came from England in the early part of 1642, landing at Salisbury, from whence he went to Haverhill, in the following summer, with his wife and 4 children. His son Job came about 1640, as presumed "to spy out the land". His youngest daugter Mary remained in England in the city of Coventry, Warwickshire, until about 1652, when she came to Haverhill.

Robert Sr. was 1st deputy of the town to General Court, and until 1654, was associate judge; county commissioner; appointed by Gen'l Ct. to give the oath of fidelity to the inhabitants of Haverhill; also appointed to set off the public lands for the limits of Haverhill. He was born about 1590, and died Sept. 29, 1658. Wife's name unknown.

He made his will Sept. 6 1658; proved at Hampton Court, 1658. In which he gives his wife house & house-lot and after her decease, to return to the children; best yoke of oxen, cows, mare &c; also 1 flaggon & cup, and Bible. If any goods come out of England, this year or the next, she to

Notes on page 7:

  • Benjamin is recorded as marrying someone with the same name as his father's second wife, in a note added later in a different hand. However later (see his entry at 118) his wife is listed with a different unmarried name.
  • The spelling of "Abijah" is uncertain. It doesn't look like "Abigail" on the next page.
